One-of-a-Kind Desertscape
Exploring my creative limits through illustrating time while photographing the desert for a fine art masterpiece.
Case Study: Creating a One-of-a-Kind Fine Art Desert Landscape

When a client commissioned me to create a one-of-a-kind fine art photograph for their home, the request went beyond capturing a beautiful scene. They wanted something exclusive—an original 1 of 1 fine art landscape that not only showcased the majesty of the desert but also reflected elements of their family’s story within a single, timeless image.
Unlike traditional landscape photography, this project required a deeper creative process. The couple had a vision but no clear picture of how it should look, trusting me to interpret their ideas into an original fine art photograph. The challenge was exciting and daunting at the same time—because with a single commissioned artwork, there’s no room for error.
After reviewing their vision, I began scouting remote desert locations along the Utah-Nevada border. My research included maps, topography, and past imagery, ensuring that the chosen site would be visually dynamic and hold the emotional weight of a true fine art piece and not just a document of a location. With an idea of where to shoot in mind I prepared for a six-day trip allowing me enough time to visit multiple locations and shoot during different times of the day.
During this part of the production was the first time it occurred to me of shooting one scene over multiple times with the intent of combining the images for a truly unique landscape. The potential of this excited me because it would also allow me to be true to my own type of conceptual art that told a story of the location and not just a depiction of where it is.
The shoot was a success with unexpected challenges and roads that took me to some amazing locations. For one night I had to sleeping in the cab of my truck during one of the loudest rain/thunderstorms of my life but having the amazing feeling of serenity of being in nature with no-one else around for miles while experiencing a sun rise and sunset in the same location.
The result was not just a photograph, but an exclusive fine art masterpiece: a desert scene depicting time crafted from vision, exploration, and artistic interpretation—truly a one-of-one creation for their collection.
