CASE STUDY: Key Visual Retouching for Wade In The Water Documentary Film
Discover how photographer & digital artist Weston Fuller created cinematic key art through advanced photo retouching & compositing for Wade In The Water.

When acclaimed director David Mesfin began preparing the promotional campaign for his upcoming documentary, Wade In The Water (www.wadeinthewaterproject.com), he reached out to me to develop the film’s signature key art. The documentary, set to release in 2027, highlights the overlooked history of Black surfing and aquatic culture—from its African origins to its modern-day presence in America. By blending historical narratives with contemporary testimonials, the film celebrates unity within surf culture while inspiring the next generation of Black surfers and aquatic athletes.
I was provided with a series of captured photographs and AI-generated background imagery, with the challenge of seamlessly compositing these diverse elements into a single, impactful visual. The retouching process began by extending and refining the seascape and wave imagery, ensuring it served as a dynamic foundation. A separately photographed throne was integrated with attention to directional lighting to match the ocean backdrop. The model—the “Black Queen”—was then placed into the image to harmonize with the throne, while splashes of water were layered into the image to enhance depth, motion, and dramatic perspective surrounding the model.
For the final touch, designer Art Sims - known for his collaborations with Spike Lee - added the typography, giving the poster its polished, cinematic quality. The result was a striking key visual that has been enthusiastically received and now anchors the film’s promotional presence online at www.wadeinthewaterproject.com.
Through this collaboration, I was able to work with David to demonstrate my expertise in creative photo retouching, digital composting,, and story telling, which aligns with my personal aesthetic for creating digital art and which I'm known for among my portfolio of conceptual photographic art.
